INTERVIEW - Tareq Alssadi
Tareq Alsaadiʼs first hover lasted 14 seconds, it was with his brothers Hirobo Sceadu bor*rowed while his brother was gone on a busi*ness trip. Since then the 31 year old resi*dent of Sharjah UAE has been turning up the heat in the U.A.E. and around the globe.
How long have you been flying RC helicopters?
I started in the Summer of 2005. Iʼve been flying almost every day since. Here in the UAE, we are lucky because we can fly all year long. It does get very warm in the summer, so from my early days I had to learn to fly in the evenings when the temperatures are a little lower. In the summer I fly mostly at night, without any
lighting systems on my heli.
How often do you fly?
I fly between two to three times a week. I have many friends who fly RC helis, and I spend a lot of time with them in the field, try*ing to test and tune their helis, and buddy-box the newer pilots.
What do you like about RC helicopters?
I truly enjoy the challenges of learning new moves. I enjoy the time I spend out on the field with other RC heli enthusi*asts and friends. When I fly, I spend those few minutes think*ing about nothing but my maneuvers, and that alone, is very enjoyable as we all need to get our minds off of our daily lives at least a few minutes a day! Above all, RC helis are fun fun fun…
Do you use a RC simulator?
I do now. I wish I knew about RC simulators when I started flying. It did cost me a little to learn to hover in all orientations. But a few months later a friend recommended the Real Flight Simulator, and I have been using it since.
Whatʼs your favorite heli and why is it your favorite?
As you know, I am not a sponsored pilot. Therefore, I have the free*dom to fly many different brands and classes of helis. I fly every*thing from a little Gaui 200, to the latest 90-sized nitro helis, and everything in between. The three helis I fly the most these days are Hi*robo Turbulence D3 and the new Vibe 90 SG as I am practicing for the 3D Masters 2009, and I truly enjoy flying my MSH Protos electric he*lis. They are a lot of fun and very capable of doing crisp 3D maneuvers.
How is the local RC heli community in your area?
We have great hobby shops in the area, including a heli-dedicat*ed shop. Therefore, parts availability and support is great. We also have a few flying fields that are well maintained, but unfortunate*ly, our fields are not organized. I wish we had an organization simi*lar the AMA of the United States to make the necessary rules and regulations to make the hobby safer and more fun for everyone
What competitions have you been a part of and is there any that you have won?
I have not been seriously competing. I have done a few demo flights at the 3D Masters 2007, and I competed in the expertʼs class at the 3D Masters 2008. However, I will be competing in the masterʼs class of 3D Masters 2009 in Spain. I have traveled to many surrounding countries to perform demo flights, and I have been invited to a few well known events in the USA, but because of my geographical location, it is very difficult for me to participate in them.
Do you have any tips or advice for new pilots? How do they get as good as you?
Yes. Use your simulators. Master a certain maneuver on the simulator be*fore you try it with your real heli. It saves you a lot of time, money, and frustration. Learn to hover in all orientations, and then learn everything in*verted. Once you master that, flying 3D becomes a lot easier. Practicing is the key. Try to practice a lot. I also recommend that pilots take occasional 4 to 6 day breaks. This is very important as you tend to forget the moves you were afraid of before, and you need to relax and refresh your mind before trying something new.
Do you have any tips or advice for experienced pilots?
Yes. There are a lot of great pilots around the world that have given our hobby a new perspective. They are the motivation behind many new pilots entering the hobby on a daily basis. Letʼs all try to help the new pilots as much as we can by helping them setup their equipment, buddy-boxing them, and spending time with them so that they stay motivated, and learn to fly and work on their helis on their own. This will expand our hobby as those pilots will do the same for the newer pilots after them… Letʼs pro*mote safety and teach the newer pilots about the dangers of our models, and ways to prevent potential accidents.
What TX do you use?
I have been using a Futaba 14MZ transmitter because it gives me the feel, performance, and features I need.
Where do you think the industry will be going in the fu*ture?
I think there will be more flybarless systems around, at lower prices. And the battery technology will improve as time goes by, offering lon*ger flight times at less weight and lower costs. Electronics and kits will become more affordable as competition increases, and product quality will improve.
What are your favorite maneuvers?
Non-stop crazy pitch pumping free style….wait for the 3D Masters!!!!
What do you prefer, electric or nitro? Why?
I fly both electric and nitro helis. Each has their own characteristics and depending on my mood, I decide what to fly. I prefer nitro helis for competitions and demo flights due the their larger appearance and presence in the air. I enjoy both.
What equipment do you prefer?
When it comes to nitro machines, I am a big fan of Yamada engines and Hatori pipes. I enjoy the power and consistency, and its ability to hold a needle valve setting very well. As far as electronics go, my governor of choice is the Aerospire Multigov Pro, because of it simplicity and great performance. I use Perfect Regulators on all my nitro helis now. I enjoy the selectable output voltage to the cyclic servos. My preferred gyro is the Spartan DS760. The piro rates are very consistent, it performs great, and the company is very supportive. I have recently switched to the new High Voltage JR servos and have paired them with a Perfect Regu*lator and Outrage Lipos. I am still getting used to the new feeling.

Who is your favorite RC heli pilot? Is there any that inspired you?
Lukas Riva is one of my favorite pilots now. I like his aggressive and precise flying style, and his ability to create new maneuvers every time I watch him fly. Alan Szabo Jr. has always been an inspiration not only to me, but also to many other pilots in the hobby. His ability to make the most difficult maneu*vers look easy to perform has motivated me to learn them since my early days.
Having mastered 3D, is it still challenging and fun?
Of course it is. Our hobby never gets tiring. There is always the challenge of learning new maneuvers and perfecting the ones I already know how to perform. There is new equipment being re*leased on a daily basis that I like to evaluate, which is always fun. I consider our hobby as a group activity, and not a one-man hobby. Itʼs nice to be able to hang out with other friends and enjoy a nice afternoon at the flying field…
