English aeronautic pioneer George Cayley established the modern notion of a fixed-wing aircraft in 1799, and he designed a glider (shown in the drawing) that was safely flown by his reluctant servant in 1853 in the first recorded successful manned flight.

Langley aerodrome No. 5 American aeronautic pioneer Samuel P. Langley conducting flight tests from a houseboat on the Potomac River near Quantico, Va. On May 6, 1896, after numerous failures, he launched aerodrome No. 5, which rose, circled, and settled gently in the water after running out of fuel.
