"ANAVATOS" (means unassailable)
"A whole village perched on top of a granite rock at the end of a cliff. Even its name, which means inaccessible, reveals the reason it was built there. Its strategic natural location and the wall protected the villagers from the pirates raiding the west coast...The houses, about 400 in number, are two leveled and rectangular. Most of the buildings are well preserved and as a whole put forth an image of a living ghost town, adding to the sublimity of this rough country. The village has been deemed a national monument to be preserved under the law."

Director of Photography: Vasilis Pahoundakis
Effects: Ilias Kletsas (AlphaFilmworks)
Music: "Moonlight sonata" - The daydream (Beethoven)

The largest village in the northwest part of Chios, Aegean Islands, Greece. "Volissos" village is situated 40 km away from the main town of Chios. Volissos has a port called "Limia" that connects the island with the island of Psara. Saint Markella of Chios lived in the village. Volissos is claimed to be one of the possible birthplaces of the famous poet Homer. According to the famous historian Herodotus, in one of his chapters refers that Homer lived and wrote his marvelous epics in this village. The village is built in amphitheatrical style on a hill and on top of it there is a Byzantine castle built in the medieval times. The castle has a trapezoid shape with six circular towers.
Marble plate at the entrance of Volissos showing an excerpt from Herodotus script in ancient Greek on Homer's life. The plate refers that Homer lived and wrote his epic poems in the village of Volissos

ABOUT "PALEA POTAMIA" VILLAGE - (INFO):
"Palea Potamia" is hidden among green hills and fields, which extend between "Aman"i and "Pelinneo" mountains. It is built in a gorge full of plants and trees, which is crossed by two streams named "Karidatos" and "Apeso". Karydatos was named after the walnut trees, which were plenty in the area. "Palea Potamia" was named after those two streams and it is well hidden because of its location. The first settlers of the village overtook the sunny part of the gorge and built their houses there - οne can see the first houses on the left side of the village. They came from a place near "Pirama" village called "Ayios Yioryis", which had a view to the sea and was easily accessible by pirates. Because of the piratesʼ invasions people moved to Palea Potamia. The rest of the residents built their houses on the other side where sun was scarce. The residents of the village were about 300 at its peak.
Although the location offered security to the people, the sunrays reached the village for only two hours in the daytime, which had as a result the emergence of tuberculosis. The dangerous disease decimated the people. The place was described as unhealthy and isolated. After the diseases and the earthquake of 1949, people decided to move in 1955 and to start building Nea Potamia (Νέα Ποταμιά) village, only two kilometers away. Until 1970, when the last residents left the village, there was no electricity.
Among the ruins of the stone houses, one can still see the school, built in 1911 (by the same man who built the school of "Volissos" village later), as well as the church of "Ayios Antonis". There was a school yard and garden in front of the school and next to the yard there were the toilets and wash tubs for the people. They boiled some water and had their bath there. The old bridge of the village was made of chestnut wood. The houses were built with earth clay and on the roof people put soil. The village was connected by three roads, one main road and two others. They were narrow with steps.
There is a building to the left of the village. This building is called "Palea Vrisi". It still has water. People living close to it went there when they wanted to take some water to their houses. They usually used pots of clay or buckets for the water. The rest of the people had wells near their houses. There was also a well near the bridge. At the centre of the village one can see a big, four storey house.
Before the 2007 fire, the scenery was much more greener than now. Nowadays the ruins of the houses are in harmony with the surrounding natural environment creating a unique and terrifying scenery (Ifigenia Sotiraki)

VESSA - The mastic trees and their priceless resin, mastiha, have become the main occupation of the residents of Southern Chios for many centuries. These trees can thrive in no other part of the world, but in Southern Chios and whomever had the luck or has chosen to live next to them, could do nothing else but appreciate the natureʼs generosity and take full advantage of it.
The renowned mastiha-castle villages constitute a study of the fortification architecture, which was created by Genovese after the re-occupation of the island, in the 14th century. All these are works of an admirable defensive planning and communication net since the era when Giustiniani took over the exploitation of the island and, first of all, took care of the cultivation of mastiha and its cultivators. They built castle villages, unseen and away from the sea, and they used the external walls of the houses as the fortification wall which would protect the villages; labyrinth-like villages, with houses closely built, so that the people could walk from one flat roof to the next; All the houses were around a very tall tower and neighbourhoods were created as containment zones of various invaders' advances.
Vessa is 20 kms away from the town of Chios, at the southern part of the island. It is a small village, but also a typical example of how medieval castle villages looked like. Vessa was created by the integration of three smaller settlements. Itʼs a semi-mountainous village, which extends in a big valley surrounded by mountains. The gate of the village is well preserved. The houses are closely built, one next to the other and there are narrow lanes. Its tall buildings remind us of towers. Although the fortification wall surrounding the village is broken in some parts, the architecture and the villageʼs planning have remained almost intact throughout the years, especially the corner towers of the castle and parts of its fortification wall.
Vessa is a stone-built village on its whole, with many restored houses. The architecture of its houses remains intact and worth admiring. The central tower is situated in the villageʼs picturesque square, almost untouched by time. The churches of the village is "Panayia", "Ayios Dimitrios" and "Panayia Petrousena", the oldest church of Chios, as the residents of the village claim. Vessa is the birth place of Konstantinos Valiadis (Konstantinos Eʼ) Ecumenical Patriarch from 1897 until 1901.

KYDIANTA VILLAGE - INFO:
The deserted village of Kidiada is in the centre of a triangle formed by the three villages, Lagada, Sikiada and Pitios. The village was created by the residents of Kila, after the destruction of Kila by pirates.
Kidiada is built amongst mountainsides and it was indistinguishable to the eyes of pirates. In the Medieval era, the village is said to have been the biggest one in the area.
When Greece revolted against the Turks (1822), Kidianta was one of the few villages which participated in the revolution and was totally destroyed by the Turks in retaliation for its residentsʼ participation.
The Massive Earthquake of 1881, was the reason for the creation of the village of Sikiada, built by a large number of residents of Kidianta. In the end of the 19th century, the people involved with the sea, started building their houses in “kolokythia” bay. That was the beginning of the creation of Lagada village.
Kidiantaʼs residents had been the navigation pioneers on Chios island. They were all free, restless minds and made the village the basis of the National resistance in Chios.
After Greeceʼs liberation from the Germans, the damages of the earthquake in 1949 and the isolation of the area, were the main reasons for the depopulation of the village. The villageʼs school worked for the last time in 1948.
Meanwhile the persecutions of a large number of residents, when they joined the grassroots movement to restore the power to the people, also played a part in the depopulation of Kidianta.
Nowadays the only buildings resisting the natural decay are the churches of Ayios Ioanis and Ayia Anastasia.
Twice every year Kidianta comes to life during two special ceremonies. The first one is dedicated to the heroic struggle of EPON.
The second one is organized by the descendants of the residents of the village on Good Friday. They come as pilgrims to honour the memory of their deserted homeland.
Kidianta along with Lagada were set up as local administrative areas in 1834.

THE LEPER COLONY:
The centuries-old institution on the Greek island of Chios once housed dozens of outcasts who had contracted the disease, which is still often misunderstood today.
These abandoned buildings offer a sometimes macabre, often poignant insight into their history - as a leper colony.
The colony, called: "Lovokomeio", opened in 1378 as the first leper colony in Greece and one of the first in all of Europe
The colony at Chios began to decline during the 19th century, when the island was the centre of fierce fighting in the Greek War of Independence. By the middle of the century Chios was largely deserted, and the situation was worsened by an 1881 earthquake which killed nearly 8,000 people.
The colony was finally shut down for good in 1957, by which time a cure had been found for leprosy and much of the stigma had disappeared in the West.

TOWER of DOTIA INFO:
The Tower of Dotia is situated near to Pyrgi village, in one of the most significant areas of Chios, as far as the mastiha production is concerned. The mastic trees surround in a unique manner this impressive monument, which is an example of the military architecture of the medieval period of Chios. The Tower was built during the general fortification of the island by the Genovese -who ruled the island and controlled the production of mastiha- at the start of the 15th century (1410-1415). This three-level building, constructed of light grey limestone is in a state of ruin with its four walls being preserved except for the southern wall, which is partially destroyed. It is a rectangular in shape (14.28x15.70, 18m height). It has seven battlements on the eastern and western sides and four on the southern and northern sides. The interior wall partitioning's at ground level have been preserved, as well as many characteristics of the vault structure on the first and second levels. The Tower did not have a door at ground level for defense purposes, but there was a lightweight ladder at the middle level. There were openings for ventilation and embrasures at the last level. It was enclosed with four-sided walling, which has preserved the traces and foundations of one of the four battlements that were situated on each corner.
